Darton College, or Darton State College, is a four-year state college located in Albany, Dougherty County in Georgia. The college offers 84 2-year transfer and career associate degrees and 49 certificate programs. The school is also a unit of the University System of Georgia. The school was founded n 1963 as Albany junior College and offered its first classes in 1966. Then in 1987 the faculty, staff, and community members chose the name Darton College. Darton is an Old English word meaning “town by the Dearne (river)”. The river it refers to is Flint River near the Albany location.
The 186 acre campus on Albany includes a theater that can seat 470, a library, fitness center, computer labs, and sports facilities such as tennis and racquetball courts, indoor swimming pool, indoor bowling alley and climbing wall. The campus also features outdoor facilities such as surrounding nature trails, soccer fields, ball fields. The school is also known for the Pecan trees located all over the campus. The school colors are red and black and the school’s nickname is the Cavaliers.
Darton also features more than 30 campus organizations and service clubs, with 11 nationally-regarded athletic programs. The college also has programs and facilities in art, dance, theatre and music. Darton values student engagement because they know that when their students are involved during college, they are more successful in academics and in life after school.
Darton College takes in more than half of the district’s high school graduates and around 45% of the students that attend Darton are from Dougherty County. Around 1% of the students that attend the school are from out of state, and only about 100 are from other countries. There are close to 6,000 students enrolled in Darton each school year.
